Stephen Chopek started 2025 by introducing his fans to GRANULIST MUSIC, a new genre that he created in his Atlanta studio where he writes, records, performs, produces, and mixes all of his solo releases.
GRANULIST MUSIC explores the architecture of song. Form becomes fluid as structure gives way to recurring motifs. Polyrhythmic permutations weave through a layered pulse that supports developing melodies and evolving harmonies.
"They're Listening", the first GRANULIST single came out on April 23rd. It unpacks the notion that surveillance is the international language of love. The latest single, ”Hearts Running Wild" was released on June 18th. The song conveys the sentiment of the city is a room darkened for lovers. Both songs are available now on the MUSIC and VIDEOS pages.
Stephen's previous works feature a unique blend of power pop, new wave, and indie rock. His acclaimed Dweller EP (2021) showcased his songwriting skills with accolades coming from global tastemakers as an “artist to watch”, comparing his music to iconic artists like Matthew Sweet, Paul Westerberg, Ben Kweller, and Evan Dando. His tributes to legendary Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan - Songs of Shane, Vol. 1 (2019) and Songs of Shane, Vol. 2 (2023) - brought attention to Shane himself with his comment “I’m Impressed!”
Prior to releasing his first solo album in 2012, Stephen spent over 10 years drumming on tour and in the studio with Charlie Hunter, John Mayer, Jesse Malin, and Mike Doughty, among many others.
Stephen grew up in Rutherford, NJ. He lived in Jersey City and Memphis, TN before moving to Atlanta, GA in 2020.
